Nero 9 Free 9.4.12.3

With support for RSS feeds, this tool helps you create discs with all kinds of data, generate NRG images and copy the contents of a CD or DVD to another location

Writing data on CDs or DVDs is a job for specialized software and among the most well-known brands in the business Nero 9 Free definitely stands out. This particular edition is special because it comes cost free, but also without many of the tools included the full suite.

Ad-riddled setup and familiar interface

Installation is not that difficult, however you have to be extra careful and pay attention at the third-party products included in the package. Also, please note that the setup will take a while until it successfully copies and installs the files on your computer.

If you used Nero in the past, everything is straightforward. It has a pleasant and clean interface, with the main functions displayed at the top of the main window on tabs.

Options to tweak and take advantage of

The functions you can use are not so many, as this edition only offers basic data copying and burning features. Just pick the files you want to copy on a disc, make the final adjustments, for burning speed and disc name and you are ready to go.

As with the other editions of Nero, you will still be able to create disc images, using an NRG file extension, as well as copy the contents of a disc to another location.

Regardless of the method you choose, you should know it is possible to verify the data after a process is complete. Moreover, it is possible to subscribe Nero RSS feeds and to input your own with just a few clicks.

Performance and conclusion

During our tests the discs were created promptly and with no errors. If the speed doesn't meet your expectations, keep in mind that the overall time that a compilation is burned in depends on a variety things. To name some, the optical drive and discs you use, the amount of data to be written and the speed at which you want the process to be carried out.

Even though a bit heavy on resources and with a lengthy install for what it brings to the table, the free edition of Nero 9 Free offers exactly what one would need to create discs in no time. For anyone who only needs to create CDs and DVDs on the fly, Nero 9 Free might be the right answer.

Totally Free Burner 7.5.1

A simple applciation that allows you to burn DVD's and CD's.

Totally Free Burner is a CD/DVD burning solution that comes with a freeware license and boasts a user-friendly approach to make sure beginners and those more experienced have no problem in figuring out which feature is which.

After launch, Totally Free Burner prompts you to pick the type of disc you wish to burn, which can be an audio CD, a video CD, a data DVD or CD and a BIN or ISO image DVD.

Placing content on the new disc is as easy as pie because the application not only that comes with drag and drop support, but it also features a clean interface to help you in this regard. So you can either drag a file over the window or simply click on the “Add File” or “Add Folder” buttons in the same window.

The bottom of the window shows you the current size of the disc and lets you erase a rewritable CD or DVD, write an ISO or proceed with the burning.

If you go for the last option, you're finally prompted to pick the device you wish to use for burning the project, but also adjust settings and change the volume name, configure speed and create a bootable disc.

The burning process works like a breeze and shouldn't hamper system performance, although during our test on Windows 7 the app crashed several times all of a sudden.

All in all, Totally Free Burner is a handy software utility that helps you burn CDs and DVDs with just a few configuration options, offering a straightforward interface to enhance the whole experience.

Burn4Free 8.8.0.0

Burn Audio CDs and DVDs using WAV, WMA, MP3/MP2/MP1 or OGG files

Burning CDs and DVDs is no longer an issue since there are so many powerful software solutions on the market, but new tools keep coming and they promise to offer many extra goodies.

Burn4Free is one of these utilities, one that is able to create data and audio CDs and DVDs, but in the same time, it can also handle ISO images, just like many other disc burners on the market.

As soon as you finish installing the software, you will get to meet an easy to use interface, not too good looking but rather more practical.

The application supports drag and drop, so you just have to add the files you wish to burn in the main window and you are pretty much ready to go. Plus, Burn4Free has a so-called 'Fly Window', which is more like a floating icon that lets you drop files into your current project on the go.

The program supports a wide variety of audio formats, including WAV, WMA, MP3, MP2, MP1 and OGG. The optical discs Burn4Free can write on are the ones you may be well accustomed with: CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM.

As it would be expected from such a software, this utility can create ISO compilations and either burn them to disc or store them in a location you specify.

There are some preferences to be customized as well, but the options are not too well organized, so you may have to spend some time in this side of the application.

All things considered, Burn4Free does a pretty decent job as it can help you create new discs and ISO images with minimal effort. The tool comes with a decent feature pack and the easy of use can make it appropriate even for less experienced users.
